Volunteer walk – 6th July

We will meet at Studham Church at 10:00.  The Church is perhaps not surprisingly located in Church Road, going west from the crossroads (by the Red Lion). The church itself is about half a mile along that road beyond the end of the village and is eventually signposted along a track. There should be plenty of hard standing outside the church.

The route will be to Dagnall and Little Gaddesden Church where we might take a break (although no actual seats). The whole thing will be just over 6 miles and is mainly open fields or woods. There are a couple of fields that might be being grazed and golf course. There are only a couple of roads to cross.

The views across the Gade valley are very good but there a two steepish hills (both up and down).

Please use the form below to register your interest in the walk. The information will be passed on to the walk organiser.

Singing Skylarks

Survey work is underway on Northchurch Common to determine the preferred locations, and approximate number of breeding farmland birds in this area.  It’s past usage, coupled with recent and current environmental management, makes it an attractive residence and nesting site for a variety of farmland bird species.  In the past forty years or so breeding farmland birds in general have suffered a 54% decline in numbers.  In certain species however this decline is much more acute.

The wide open space that occupies a good portion of this common is a tempting prospect for future environmental improvement plans.   However, mindful of the decline in farmland bird species,   before any new ideas are implemented upon the common, Emily is mapping territories for individual birds and locations where groups of them can be found. Primarily, these are Skylarks and Meadow Pipits but including any other interesting species that may be identified in the process. It is no accident that these two species are being targeted.  Skylark numbers declined by 62% between 1970-2013 and the RSPB have included the Meadow Pipit on their Amber list for concern, due to a similar long term trend in declining numbers.

Click here to listen to the Skylarks and Meadow Pipits (you will need to click the ‘Back’ button in your browser when finished listening) – background noise due to the road and airplanes.

Thursday group Thunderdell Lane (College end)

As promised and as the sun was shining a few snaps were taken for you to see. The building material for the bank contained a lot of clay so it was hard work to get the correct height and shape.

Turf was then placed over the bank and trodden in. It is work in progress. The pictures don’t reflect the amount of effort that went into creating it.

Notices going missing

A post from one of our new volunteer rangers, Richard.

Early this week the Trust installed several wooden frames on Northchurch Common with notices asking people to keep to the wide paths to avoid disturbance to skylarks nests. By the next day four notices had been removed, and today I have been given more notices by Emily to replace them.

I have in the past also replaced some bird nesting notices at Northchurch Common car parks. Some people seem intent on removing these. One good thing, the grass and thistles are growing well, should help to deter dogs from trampling over the grass where skylarks and meadow pipits are nesting.

Thursday group 9th June

This week we’ll be completing the work on Monument Green that we started last week – trying to cover over the bare patches where the grass has been worn away using soil and turf that came out of the pond. Also we’ll be using the rest of this material to build another bank at the bottom of Thunderdell Lane, near to the college.

If the sun is shining then it would be good to take some photos….
Hopefully photos will be posted at some point after Thursday.

Meet at Barracks Square 9.30am. Anyone coming along the Beacon road or through Ringshall should be aware that there are signs out saying that road will be closed at those points.

Sunday group constructing the corral at Dockey Wood

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

I appreciate that the bluebells are now ‘long gone’ for this year but after being given access to the photos of the corral construction I just had to post them in a gallery for you all to enjoy.

Just out of interest the Thursday group built a similar fence on a  much smaller scale to the  one at Dockey Wood by the visitors centre many months ago. As time has passed the fence could now do with some ‘love and care’ as visiting children have been in the habit of pulling  wood out of the fence and throwing it into the pond which was also constructed by volunteers.
